We’re excited to introduce a new dark mode for Broken Build’s most demanded apps, 'Agile Reports and Gadgets' and 'Velocity Chart Gadget'.
Check out how sleek our apps look in this new dark aesthetic:
The transformation is not just visually striking; it's a game-changer for night owls and those who prefer the cooler, less eye-straining side of the color spectrum.
A story about how Broken Build came to the dark side
Until 2023, Jira was famous for its bright UI, which remained untouched despite the global tendency to switch to a dark mode in browsers, apps, and overall on devices.
This trend started in 2019 with Apple's launch of dark mode in iOS 13. This move, along with similar initiatives by other tech giants like Microsoft and Google, signaled a broader acceptance and implementation of dark mode in user interfaces and applications.
In 2021, the dark side officially won when, according to this survey, people chose to use dark mode in nearly 90% of well-known programs.
But not in Jira.
For years, users (including the Broken Build team) demanded a dark theme in Jira. The most determined among us didn't sit back and wait; they invented clever fixes, including third-party browser extensions. Yet, these workarounds were far from perfect—often complicated, sometimes costly, and not always reliable. So a significant number of users preferred to wait it out, reluctant to rely on third-party solutions, holding out hope for the day when dark mode would be natively integrated into Jira.
Finally, in May 2023, Jira gave up and rolled out a new theme feature that lets you toggle between light and dark modes as you please.
According to our internal data, 17.4% of app users have chosen the dark mode immediately.
To follow the wave, just a few months after this major Jira update, Broken Build introduced a new dark theme for its most popular apps, 'Agile Reports and Gadgets' and 'Velocity Chart Gadget', showing our commitment to evolving with user preferences and enhancing their experience.
The beauty of this release lies in its simplicity and user-centric design. You don’t have to fiddle with settings or manually activate anything; our apps will automatically adapt to your Jira theme, ensuring a consistent user experience across your Jira workspace.
Other benefits of the Jira dark mode
Switching to dark mode is not just a matter of taste; it is also about making the interface more comfortable. Just a few facts about the dark mode:
59% of people who use devices with bright white screens report dry eyes, irritation, neck and shoulder pain, headaches, and visual impairment (research).
Dark mode makes it easier to code for more extended periods, according to 70% of software professionals globally (research).
Using dark mode at 100% brightness reduces power consumption by an average of 67% (report).
